Operational difficulties of Migrating to cloud
Cloud Technology owes its popularity to its ability to bring about a certain level of ease and efficiency over traditional computing systems. The idea of businesses being able to access workloads from anywhere and not having to stress over research and purchase of infrastructure and not having to update them on a regular basis, took a lot of weight off organizations. But migrating to cloud is not without challenges. Here’s a window into some hiccups an organization might have to deal with before it gets to its comfort zone in the cloud.
The challenges of migrating to cloud
Welcoming the change
When workloads are moved from traditional data centers to the cloud, the organization— the people the machinery — has to be readied for the change. It might take some time to accept the change and adapt to it.
Setting the stage
The organization has to be somewhat prepared for the migration. It needs to have the necessary infrastructure in place. It needs manpower too. As far as the workforce is concerned, not all of it is going to be ready for the new systems. They have to be prepared too. And so there is the need to find the right experts to get the others onboard, train them, get them familiarized with the news ways and also ease the skepticism they may have.
Setting up a migration budget
It is true that cloud based systems will prove financially beneficial in the long run, bringing down the costs on the whole. However there’s no denying the expenses that arise at the time of migration. It will be a new item on the expense sheet as the organization needs to find the money to bring in the technological requirements and train the employees to use the new medium.
Prioritizing the workload
The migration, almost always does not happen all together and it cannot take place all of a sudden. So the concerned people need to get the priorities drawn out before they work on the migration. The process could mean some downtime. So it has to be done in such a way that there is no major disruption.
Re-designing the processes
The shift to the cloud brings with it a whole lot of changes. It calls for tweaks in the management. The infrastructure architecture might need some modifications and the legacy systems need to be connected to cloud. This means the company will have to set aside time for some brainstorming and will have to redesign its processes.
Charting out strategies
At this point when the migrations are taking place or when the first few phases of it are in the place, there may not be a prescribed set of rules to follow. So there appears another need – the need to chart out the best strategies to get the processes set up and running.
Security and compliance
Migration comes with its own set to security issues. This underlines the need to identify weak areas and come up with solutions for them.
As such the organization needs to put in place its own security measures. It also needs to look into industry standards and its compliance requirements to take the steps to safeguard the new system.
